…… Interview with Tom Ford

This is a very interesting interview of

Tom Ford on CNN.

"Ford received hate mail from his ”predecessor and rival Yves Saint-Laurent when Ford took Yves Saint-Laurent’s eponymous fashion house in 1999 when parts of it were sold to the Gucci group, where Ford was creative director.”

Ford went on to say that at first the two were on amicable terms and Laurent was supportive, but that soon changed with the success Ford produced for the fashion house. Ford told CNN, “I have letters that he wrote to me about it, you know: ‘In 13 minutes on the runway you have destroyed 40 years of my career’…I am really happy I have them — they are written in his own hand. When I’m 85, maybe I’ll put them in a book — if anyone cares.”

…… The It-Bag

Why those in the know are no longer in
with the It Bag  more here

The once-fashionable accessory does not carry the same weight it once did. Harriet Walker reports on new trend for the utility bag.

The It Bag is dead! Long live the It Bag!

In fashion circles, there's always a new piece of designer luggage to tote, but this season you'd be hard-pressed to spot it. With the overkill and overexposure of so many labels, what with celebs parading their goods everywhere from red carpets to the final of Britain's Got Talent, the style cognoscenti have turned to the last word in understated and elite accessories: the utility bag. Such a bag is likely to be quiet, casual, anonymous and – of course –staggeringly expensive.

"It's to do with the fact that fashion has gone so overground," explains Iain R. Webb, professor of fashion at Central Saint Martins in London. "Cheryl Cole wears all the latest London designers on The X Factor, it's all show, show, show.

"This is the way that the high-end fashion industry returns to elitism.”

The industry is not, of course, shunning the highly lucrative market for OTT and bling – only this week, a Gucci handbag costing £11,040, made from crocodile skin and topped with a bamboo cane handle, sold out on Net-a-Porter.com. But some of the season's other offerings – and some of the most popular among those in the know – are rather quieter in the way they proclaim their fashion credentials.

"Fashions happen in cycles,”

Professor Webb continues. "It was the same in the early Nineties, too. With them..., as soon as you see it, you know – but with these..., only those in the know will know.”

"Fashion is once again becoming something more artistic, and less commercial," Professor Webb adds.

…… You’re what you wear

You Really Are
What You Wear ...
Or at least your designer labels make
it seem that way

Finally: a good reason to go shopping.

A new study detailed in The Economist found that fashion labels give you perceived status: "designer" brands make you look richer and more employable.

Researchers Rob Nelissen and Marijn Meijers of Tilburg University in the Netherlands found that test subjects perceived the wearers of branded polo shirts (Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger) to be of a higher status than non-branded items.

According to the Economist, the researchers found "such clothes do bring the benefits promised: co-operation from others, job recommendations and even the ability to collect more money when soliciting for charity."

Of course, this is hardly news to the likes of Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan or any other designer. These savvy marketers have known for ages that people buy into labels for the status they convey.

Even more interestong in this study was all of that perceived status went away when test subjects found out that the label wearers were given the "designer" item for free. "The shirt no longer represented an honest signal," said The Economist

Seems that designer label status only works – according to this study – if we know that the wearer actually paid for the item.

Azzedine Alaïa turned down Dior

Azzedine Alaïa Turned Down the Dior Job

"….the Financial Times says the designer told the paper himself that he turned down Galliano's job at Dior. Vanessa Friedman writes:

Mr Alaia wasn’t interested. Flattered, but not about to pursue. The story of what happened with John was a sad story, he said when I asked him, and he didn’t want to be part of the next chapter. And that’s even before you got to the other stuff.

The sheer fact that the Dior leadership was thinking this way does, however, make me think the field may be more open than the fashion world suspects.

Speculating as to why Alaïa turned down the job, Friedman wisely notes that not only is he in his seventies, but more important, he's the rare designer who has taken a stand against the ultra-, perhaps impossibly demanding nature of the fashion cycle:

Mr Alaia has been perhaps the most vocal advocate of all living designers about the need to change the fashion system, to slow it down, to stop the relentless demand for more collections and more store openings. Years ago he stopped having official fashion shows, and started showing, and delivering to stores, only when he was ready as opposed to when the schedule dictates. And one of the houses that most embodies that continuous pressure is Dior; indeed, when former designer John Galliano imploded, the pressures of the system were cited as major contributing factors.

Also, Alaïa has a pretty sweet deal with his namesake label, now partially owned by Richemont. "They leave me alone," he said. Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH, which owns Dior, would go into Galliano's showroom and interrogate him about each piece of clothing, tell him he doesn't want to see certain handbags in stores, and make suggestions about the ad campaign. So it's a stressy life, but you knew that.

Purple is the color of good judgment.

It is the color of people seeking spiritual fulfillment. It is said if you surround yourself with purple you will have peace of mind. Purple is a good color to use in meditation. Purple has been used to symbolize magic and mystery, as well as royalty. Being the combination of red and blue, the warmest and coolest colors, purple is believed to be the ideal color. Violet is the color of purpose. Violet is associated with the Crown chakra (This links individual and universal).
